Description | In natural discourse, it was found that some particles had prominence and were uttered with higher fundamental frequency (F0) in Japanese. This phenomenon played a very important part in naturalness and understandability of discourse. We investigated prominent particles with regard to frequency, functions and acoustic features. Discourse on six different subjects uttered by an announcer at five speech rates were investigated. The following features were observed; (a) In explanatory discourse, the frequency of occurrence of prominent particles is higher than in dramatic discourse. (b) Prominent particles appear more frequently as speech rate becomes slower. From the point of the grammatical function, the use of prominent particle is divided into two types: (c1) Particles followed by new and important information; (c2) Particles with emphasis on themselves followed by assistant negative phrase. These grammatical functions were reflected in F0 contours. F0 contour of the former (c1) was falling and then rising gradually. The latter F0 (c2) was falling down, then discontinuously rising and falling again.
