Description | This paper deals with the coreferential reading of referring expressions. When an entity is repeatedly referred to, the referring expression for this entity generally changes from an indefinite noun phrase to a definite noun phrase, and then to a pronoun. When the referring expressions occur in this order, the hearer (or the reader) can easily understand that they refer to one and the same thing. If they appear in a different order, s/he usually takes them to be referring to quite different things. However, referring expressions in a reversed order sometimes refer to one and the same entity and the hearer understands their coreferentiality. The main purpose of this paper is to make explicit the factors that help the hearer to understand such coreferentiality.
