The dental profession is continually challenged today to maintain its high ethical standards in the face of changes in the clinical dentistry and research. The ethical statements subscribed to by the profession place the patient's welfare above any other consideration. In this review article, the history of medical ethics, methodology of medical ethics, and an example of ethics in dental research were dealt with. Generally speaking, Japanese are weak in discussion about principle. They say, Apart from principle, let's discuss the procedure-based approach. And informed consent, to provide patient records in accordance with applicable law, narrative and other ethical standards have introduced from abroad. The Japanese dental profession and dental students should challenge to maintain the high ethical standards.
