Description
The present study focuses on one of several methods useful in describing text types based upon the vocabulary frequency list, Extended HAYASHI's Quantification Method Type III, a statistical method used in multivariate analysis. The main objective of this study is to introduce notions underlying this statistical method and to demonstrate its use in describing text typology in large corpora. Extended HAYASHI's Quantification Method Type III is useful in the processing of the frequency table of the pronominal forms across 728 textual samples taken from the Book Corpus, the Spoken Corpus and the Times Corpus accumulated in the Bank of English at COBUILD. On the basis of the distribution of pronouns, the structure of the Bank of English is determined. Relationships among pronominal forms, relationships among textual samples and, more importantly, relationships between pronominal forms and textual samples are made explicit through the use of this statistical method. The personal involvement vs. personal detachment factor plays an important role in determining the structure of the corpus. This study concludes with suggestions for possible applications in corpus linguistics.
