Description
Double-degree programs are just becoming popular in Japanese higher education. This study reports the results of a questionnaire survey on double-degree programs (and other related programs such as joint-degree and dual-degree programs) arranged between 22 Japanese institutions and their overseas partners. The questions asked the include motivation for starting double-degree programs with overseas institutions, program details, and linguistic aspects of the programs. When classified into three groups (i.e., outgoing programs, incoming programs and bidirectional programs), the programs show some distributional characteristics. By European standards (Rauhvargers 2002), the degree of integration is not so high in the double-degree programs between Japanese and foreign institutions surveyed. The aspect that was most expected by the institutions surveyed was “good influence on other students from the increased incoming/outgoing students (e.g., internationalization of campus and improvements of language skills)”.
