The purpose of this study is to investigate the use and comprehension of onomatopoeia (Study1), the tendency to use onomatopoeia and adult words (Study2) in infants and toddlers and the actual situation of onomatopoeia use in childcare settings (Study3). The results of Study1 revealed that the frequency of onomatopoeia reached its peak at two years of age, and the level of semantic comprehension increased with age, and the frequency of adult language use increased and the frequency of onomatopoeia use decreased with age (Study2). In Study3, it was observed that when the teachers used onomatopoeia, they spoke to the infants with onomatopoeia as well as with actions at the same time, and that the infants understood the teachers' intentions. Through these investigations, the usefulness of the use of onomatopoeia was discussed.
