Reading picture books to children is an activity that is routinely done at home and in childcare settings from infancy. It is thought that reading stories to children has a significant impact on their development. In this study, we examined the attitudes of childcare workers toward reading picture books to the children.
In Study I, we surveyed their awareness using a questionnaire. The results showed that there was a difference in the purpose of reading to children depending on their age, and that emotional awareness was more important than verbal awareness from 0 to 3 years old, although there was no difference between these two awareness in 4- and 5-years old children, suggesting that the awareness of child care workers changes depending on the age of the children.
In Study II, we used semi-structured interviews to investigate the attitudes of childcare workers. The results showed that nursery school teachers emphasized emotional awareness from the perspective of "nurturing" when reading to children, and that linguistic awareness and emotional awareness became equal at the age of 4 to 5 years. Therefore, it was suggested that the linguistic and emotional awareness overlap in reading to children. As for the method of reading to the children and the response to the children during the reading, except for the age group of 0- and 1-year old children, the reading consistently emphasized on the flow of the story, and the readers tended not to actively work on the story.
