Description
Itaconyl chloride (IC) was prepared using an industrially viable method to guarantee sufficiently high purity for polycondensation. Itaconic acid, a bio-based dicarboxylic acid with an acrylic skeleton, generates anhydride during chlorination by common reagents such as thionyl chloride and oxalyl chloride, resulting in poor yields and purity. In contrast, the combination of dichloromethyl alkyl ether and a Lewis acid catalyst was effective because it converted the anhydride intermediate into IC. Although melt polymerization of IC and aliphatic diols resulted in low conversions, interfacial polymerization with bisphenol Z afforded the corresponding semi-aromatic polyesters containing itaconic skeletons.
