Description
Many images of animals are found in Hagiwara Sakutaro's poems. He mixed these images with human ones. He expressed his sexual impatience, loneliness and longing for beauty through animal images such as flapping butterflies, swimming bacteria, barking dogs and so on. Such characteristics can be seen in the works of Nietzsche, by whom Sakutaro was greatly influenced. Using animal images like a snake, an eagle, a camel, a lion etc., he conveys nuances of his value judgments. Sactaro's usage of animal images displays the same characteristics. Besides, I think Sakutaro utilized animal images to express something outside the stereotyped humanity. D. H. Lawrence, who was also greatly influenced by Nietzsche, used the image of a sloughing snake to describe the process of changing the mode of living. Sakutaro's creepy animal images may have the same function. In order to ascertain this point, I analyze his long poem, Hibarinosu or The Skylark's Nest. This poem includes the image of breaking eggshell. The interior experience described here is miserable, but there is a flicker of hope in this poem, especially in the images of eggs. The image of a sloughing snake or breaking of an eggshell can be regarded as lonesome efforts by writers who try to get out of the inflexible reality. They use animal images to express something outside the stereotyped humanity.
