Despite their high prevalence in the general population, depressive and anxiety disorders (panic disorder included) are underdiagnosed and undertreated in a primary care setting. Nonpsychiatric practitioners should keep in mind that the clinical interview with the patient is a key part of the accurate diagnosis of mental disorders. Recent advances in the classification system of psychopathology made it possible for clinicians to give diagnoses based on well-defined criteria. Once diagnosed, most mildly depressed and panic patients can be treated successfully, either with medication, psychotherapeutic interventions, or a combination of both.
