抄録 | Objective: In previous studies, resignation has been examined from the point of view of goal disengagement and goal reengagement; its relationship with mental health was also considered. However, in a similar survey of Japanese youth, it is predicted that the results may differ from the studies mentioned above, due to differences in culture. This study investigates the effects of goal disengagement and goal reengagement on the mental health of adolescents in Japan.
Methods: In all, 235 college students (132 men and 103 women) participated in this study. The participants completed a Japanese Goal Disengagement and Reengagement Scale and the Japanese version of the Perceived Stress Scale. Results: Assessment using a hierarchical multiple regression analysis showed that those who were able to reengage in new goals reported better mental health in uncontrollable situations. However, there was no association between any subscales of goal disengagement and the mental health of adolescents. Conclusions: These findings indicate that the tendency of goal reengagement is an important factor that can protect the mental health of adolescents confronted with unattainable goals. |
