抄録 | There has been a growing interest internationally in the theoretical and emprical studies on social capital. Putnam, one of the most prominent advocates of social capital concept, deifines social capital as the features of social organizations, such as trust, norms, and networks that can improve the efficiency of society by facilitating coordinated actions. He also argues that the dense associational networks of citizens nourish mutual trust amang them and enrich social capital in the society. This study firstly reviews the concept and the characteristics of social capital along with its theoretical development. Secondly, this study examines the mutually complementary relationship between the promotion of sports and social capital. The major findings are summarized as follows: (1) The term social capital is a nebulous concept, and other point out the difficulties posed in measuring social capital. (2) In studying social capital, it is important that researchers concentrate future research efforts on the measuring and generalizaiting social capital. (3) Therefore, this study emphasizes the necessity of the deeperr research on the mutually complementary relationship between the promotion of sports and social capital.
