抄録 | Auxiliary uses of the Japanese verbs, yaru and morau, are metaphorical extension of their lexical uses meaning 'give' and 'receive'. Auxiliary uses interpret events as metaphorical gift giving, while lexical uses describe actual movement of an object or transfer of possession. This paper examines particles to present metaphorical receivers in a sentence with auxiliary yaru 'give', and particles to present metaphorical givers in a sentence with auxiliary morau 'receive', to investigate the relation between the verbs of auxiliary use and their preceding verbs. Particles attached to metaphorical receiver and giver often differ from those attached to physical ones. They basically correspond to the roles of participants in the action or event the preceding verb describes, and sometimes to the role of target or source of some object transfer, which the preceding verb does not indicate. The combination of the two kinds of verbs produces this transfer. The preceding verb builds a space of an actual action or event and the auxiliary yaru or morau builds a space of image, i. e. the image schema of giving and receiving. These two spaces integrate to produce a blended space, sometimes with an object from the space of preceding verb combined with directionality from the space of image schema of giving and receiving. Particles present metaphorical receiver and giver as participants in this blended space. This observation indicates the possibility that the two spaces to be compared in metaphor in general interact to produce a blended space.
