The Man Who Died is a novella which shows D. H. Lawrence's characteristics very well. In this essay I have divided it into several parts, pulled out phrases which seem important from each part, and examined them closely. The parts are as follows: 1) The Cock…The story begins with an episode of a young cock. Though tethered to a farmer's hut, it is full of vigor. 2) Revival…The man who died (Jesus Christ) revives in a cave and gets into the living world again. His agony contrasts with the beauty and freshness of surrounding nature 3) A Farmer's House…The man's impressions of a farmer, his wife, and the fresh nature are described. He regards the cock as an expression of the power of nature. 4) Conversation With His Former Disciple…He feels the difference of him from one of his former disciple. 5) A Farmer's House Again…He feels alienated among the people around him, the farmer and his wife and his former disciples and his mather and so on. 6) Into the Phenomenal World…The man's view of human societies and his decision of parting from them and of getting into the phenomenal world are told.
