This study examined the future of regional and community studies based on a “new way of life” that avoids the “Three Cs” (Closed Spaces, Crowded Places, and Close-Contact Settings) recommended due to COVID-19.
First, we summarized how COVID-19 affected members of the Japan Association of Regional and Community Studies. Then, I discussed the issues of the framework of the “new social behavior.” Although we are facing a choice between “Action to save lives” or “Action related to the social economy,” the answer is evident. We must choose “Action to save lives” and refrain from activities related to the social economy. A subsequent analysis of the “new social behavior” based on the Japanese government policy of the “100,000- yen handout” and the “Go To travel” campaign was performed.
Consequently, I discussed the issue of the symposium: the decline of community activities in the COVID-19 era and the over-tourism issue in the post COVID-19 era. Urban amenity theorists believe that urban revitalization will resume after the COVID-19 era. However, in this case, it will reintroduce existing problems such as tourism gentrification. In this paper, I see potential in the workcations produced by the rapid decline of the tourism industry and the rise of remote work in the COVID-19 era. Further, I suggest that a new growth model may emerge through the democratization of public space, rather than growth centered on the urban creative class.
