Up until now, sports in Japan have been managed mainly by schools and companies, but now sports called lifestyle sports such as surfing and skateboarding are growing at a rapid pace. Skateboarding can be said to have changed its recognition and attention the most before and after the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Influenced by this, local governments are holding events that incorporate skateboarding to create excitement. Originally, it should not be possible for the government, which is at the opposite end of the spectrum in terms of values, to promote this, so why are these efforts being made? In order to understand what kind of practices are actually being carried out, we will discuss three cases in Tokushima Prefecture that differ in the nature of the management body and the degree of understanding of counterculture that differs from that of major sports. The purpose of this study is to understand the current state of skateboarding events promoted by Japan, and to clarify the problems and challenges of their management methods. As a result of fieldwork, factors such as a mismatch between the old style and the park's new style, controlled management versus counterculture, lack of understanding of street culture, and differences in culture and enjoyment between different events even within the same street culture were revealed. We believe that this is largely influenced by their experience with lifestyle sports such as skateboarding and their understanding of counterculture. With more skateboarding events expected to be held in the future than ever before, the government needs to understand the history of skateboarding and the nature of its physical culture. On the competitors' side, it can be said that the key to success will be to successfully combine public nature and counterculture through mutual compromise, while also taking into account the trend toward a newly formed sport. To this end, it is urgent to create a new management format in which all those involved in the event form their own positions and from a public perspective.
