Description | Based on the student leadership programs in the U.S. and in consideration of their particular characteristics, this paper concludes that there are two major factors behind the expansion of campus leadership programs in the U.S. One is the shift of the leadership paradigm due to a rapidly changing society facing complex issues, and another is the paradigm shift in undergraduate education from “teaching paradigm” to “learning paradigm”. Japanese colleges and universities are also currently facing a similar situation and are therefore expected to prepare students to become effective and engaging citizens in this increasingly globalized and complicated world. As such, it would be beneficial if Japanese institutes could learn and refer to student leadership models and guidelines that have been developed by leadership scholars and educators in the U. S.
